What is Counselling?

Is where you can discuss what is worrying you or feeling overwhelmed about in a confidential and non-judgmental space. It is a collaborative process that allows you the opportunity to talk openly about things that you may be having difficulty and need a neutral point of view or feel uncomfortable talking to family or friends about.

What is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)?

CBT is an evaded talking therapy that looks at how you think about yourself, the world and other people around you. CBT believes that 'we feel the way we think' and by changing our automatic negative thoughts to more healthy ones you will feel happier about yourself and life.

It's a short-term, goal-oriented psychotherapy treatment that takes a hands-on, practical approach to problem-solving.

CBT can be used to help with:

  • anxiety and panic attacks

  • depression

  • eating problems

  • obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

  • anger problems

  • relationship problems

  • chronic fatigue syndrome

  • chronic pain

  • bad habits

  • general health problems

  • and more.

 

Clients come to see me for a variety of reasons and below are some of the most frequent needs that clients have.

 

Stress & Worry

Almost everyone experiences stress from time to time and while a small amount of stress can motivate us, too much or prolonged stress can be damaging to both our physical and mental health.

Stress typically begins as pressure – from ourselves or others – and if we are unable to cope with this pressure, we feel stressed. The effects of stress will differ from person to person, but if left untreated it can lead to illness.

 

 Anxiety

Anxiety is a feeling of unease, such as worry or fear, that can be mild or severe. Everyone has feelings of anxiety at some point in their life – for example, you may feel worried and anxious about sitting an exam, or having a medical test or job interview. During times like these, feeling anxious can be perfectly normal. 

However, some people find it hard to control their worries. Their feelings of anxiety are more constant and can often affect their daily lives.

 

Low Self-Esteem & Confidence

Self -esteem is how you think about yourself; the more positive feelings you have towards yourself, the higher your self-esteem and the more negative  feelings you have the lower your self-esteem is. How you view yourself usually dictates how you live your life and the decisions you make - and how others view you too.

Self-confidence is about trusting your own judgment and feeling comfortable with who you are and your abilities. It is a means to fulfil your full potential and be the person you want to be. Some people can be confident in certain areas of there life and not so in others, we all differ. 

 

Depression & Loss

Depression affects people in different ways and can cause a wide variety of symptoms. Depression is a common mental health issue that has a variety of physical and mental symptoms. Although we feel down and fed up every now and again, depression is more than just that. Depression is when you feel sad for weeks or even months at a time.

Loss is not only about losing a loved one but it can also be about the loss of a past way of life, friendships, employment, moving home/country or loss of good health due to chronic illness or an accident, and more.

Bereavement is the time we spend adjusting to this loss. There is no standard time limit and there is no right or wrong way to feel during the bereavement period - everyone must learn to cope in their own way.
